Hey Fellow Sprucelanders!

It's about that time to start thinking about this upcoming '08 summer camp experience. How fun! I'd like some input from those of you returning this summer.

First: Who is interested in the instructor and assistant programs?      I would like to hear from those interested by June 10th. My email is jaimesawka@mac.com ~ I no longer use my yahoo account.

Second: How do you think we could improve on our structure? All your ideas are welcome.

In addition, I would like to enlist your help to put together the reference journals we talked about last year. I would like different exercises and the reasons behind them. I think it will help instructors (new and old) keep our lessons fresh.

Try looking through different horsey related books and magazines for ideas. You could even try the web. CHA has a page that is devoted to essays written by members on all sorts of subjects. There is also a new site with some great videos for your viewing: www.nicker.com.

I am looking forward to hearing from all of you. Your ideas and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Sprucelands Riding Instructor and Barn Manager Development Program

Teaching well rounded lessons is very demanding and requires more knowledge than most experienced riders have. The reality is that many instructors start out  watching other more experienced instructors in order to develop different teaching techniques.

As you are probably aware, there are subtleties in riding that require a trained and discriminating eye that needs to be developed.  Many instructors will tell you that you should constantly further your knowledge of the sport in order to be an effective teacher. The most effective way of doing that is by going to clinics and observing or riding. However, one of the cheapest ways of developing your eye is by watching lessons, or going to horse shows and sitting by the schooling ring. It’s very interesting what you’ll hear. 

Eileen, Alison and Jaime Involved

This summer again, those of you who are interested in teaching will have guidance. Eileen, Alison, and I are continuing the Instructor Development Program from last summer. It will touch on new aspects of teaching lessons and you will have an opportunity to practice with a wide variety of riders.

I understand that some of you are not interested in teaching at all and would rather be in the barn. You have some flexible choices. Right now, I would like to start speaking with those of you interested  in our Instructor and Barn Manager Development program.

Be forewarned that instructing and managing the barn is work, but also very rewarding. I hope that this program is also something you can put on college applications, and job resumes. I am very excited for this summer and hope that  you join me with your enthusiasm!
